Garbage Pileup Expected as Collectors Take 9-Day Holiday
Residents in Phnom Penh have been warned to expect a buildup of garbage as at least half of the city’s garbage collectors will be on holidays for nine days beginning Thursday. An announcement on the Phnom Penh Municipality’s website, posted Friday, said residents should expect disruptions to garbage collections, which are usually made daily by the privately-owned Cintri, because of the Pchum Ben festival and the voter registration period for the July 2013 National Elections. … [Seng Chamroeun, vice chairman of Cintri] said that a slowdown in collections was unavoidable because the company could not prevent workers from traveling to the provinces during both the holiday and the election registration period. …
